Privacy and Security in the Information Age

Abstract: Can we keep information secret while still getting value out of it? This is usually impossible in the real world -- you need to take something out of a locked box before you can use it. Modern cryptography, however, allows us to do this and much more. In this talk, I will focus on recent trends in cryptography, discuss structural challenges (such as interfacing with law enforcement), the rise in cyber-crime, and how companies can combat this. Specifically, I will discuss some details of recent breaches and how they were dealt with at both managerial and technical levels.
